Volunteer Opportunities

The Ohio River Festival of Books is a celebration of the rich literary traditions and accomplishments of West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and beyond.

Volunteer Requirements: No experience is needed to volunteer – just a desire to help and an ability to work cooperatively with others. Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of a three-hour period. Volunteers must attend a training session, which will be scheduled prior to the festival.

Hours: Volunteers can indicate the hours they prefer to work however the Volunteer Committee will make final assignments. The time periods include:

  • 8:30am-11:30pm,
  • 11:30am-2:30pm
  • 2:30pm-5:30pm

Volunteer Areas:

  • Children’s Activities – Assist performers, children’s authors, and storytellers with activities. Must be patient, flexible, and have a sense of humor.
  • Information Station – Provide information to visitors as well as check in authors, performers, vendors, and volunteers. Must be able to think quickly and communicate effectively with people from all walks of life.
  • Greeters – Count visitors as they enter the festival area. Greet and direct people to activities of interest. Some greeters will also circulate throughout the festival area to assist where needed. Must be friendly and sociable and observant – taking every opportunity to be helpful and welcoming.
  • Room Monitors – Remain in rooms where presentations take place. Count attendance, pass out and collect evaluation forms, and assist the authors when necessary. Must be attentive and focused and ready to intervene if audience discussion warrants facilitation.
  • Hospitality – Monitor the hospitality area and assure that materials are stocked and that only individuals with proper authority are admitted. Assist with author luncheon.
